Budget Planning for FY2011

In these unprecedented economic times, it is incumbent on every school district to meet the challenges of dramatically reduced revenues, while trying to maintain a quality educational program. In my 25 years as a superintendent, I have never experienced the downturn in general purpose aid that we are facing over the next few years.  In order to deal with these extraordinary circumstances, we will have to present a budget with a mix of short term cuts and models that provide for long term sustainability. The implications of this approach will be significant.  A presentation, shown at the January 19, 2010 board meeting, describes the strategies that I have proposed to meet the challenges of this recession.  It impacts all our cost centers and programs.  The loss of personnel is unavoidable given the size of the revenue losses. As you will note in the presentation, I've attempted to maintain community schools, current programming and reasonable class sizes, while being mindful that we need to realize greater efficiencies.  Your support and understanding of the current situation are appreciated.

Thank you,

Dr Mark S. Eastman
